Camp Staff for 2010:
Laura Bowman, Camp Director, 39
Scotty Bowman, Kitchen Director, 41

Laura and Scotty have been unschooling for 14 years, radically unschooling for the last 5 or so.  Laura started a world-wide social forum for radical unschoolers called the Radical Unschoolers Network.   She is the Co-Coordinator of the bi-annual event known as ARGH (Autodidactic Radical Gathering of Homeschoolers) which takes place in the beautiful mountains of East Tennessee.  She is an artist and a dreamer and loves spending time with kids of all ages, especially teens since she is still a teenager at heart.  Scotty has spent the last 15 years working to support the family, the last 6 years as a chef so naturally he will be running the kitchen at camp.  At the end of 2009, he walked away from the restaurant business to go back to school and pursue his passion for outdoor adventures.  He is currently a student in the Parks & Rec department and will use his time there to gain knowledge and certifications he will need to help build our new business, Bowman Adventures, which ETUSC is a big part of.  Together, they have raised 3 pretty amazing kids...Samuel, Silas, and Sadie.

Sadie Bowman, Director's Assistant

Awesome person all around!!  You’ll find Sadie around camp helping her mom and hanging out with friends.  She loves doing makeup, playing her ukulele, watching youtube videos, Bratz dolls, and spending time with her family and friends.

He was recently accepted into the bachelors of liberal arts program at Harvard Extension, and hopes to pursue a career in astrophysics.

Andrew Heintz, Counselor, 21

Andrew is a crazy eclectic who'd like to do it all and yet somehow can't find enough time to clean his room. He ferments, argues, and enjoys guilty pleasures such as Dante, deviations, and gardening. He's a child of the 90s, but misses the 80s terribly. His favorite Shakes is "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and his favorite movie is "Dead Poets' Society." He is currently a student in NC, and he hopes to one day get paid to read books.

Brenna McBroom, Counselor, 20
Brenna McBroom is 20 years old and hails from Jacksonville, Florida. A longtime unschooler, her passions include throwing pots, binding books, glazing pots, reading about serial killers, photographing pots, baking pies, trimming pots, traveling around the United States, and eating out of pots.
She can bench press a large octopus. Her toenails are considered by many to possess magical properties. Her favorite word is 'apocryphal.’

Cameron Mixson Lovejoy, Counselor, 22
Cameron is an on-the-road traveler with love for organic farming, good travel novels, daily journaling, hitch hiking, dancing, live music, and solitude in the forest. For five years he's played the drums, but now you can find with with his hands around a mandolin, mostly just staring at it. Currently, Cameron is very interested in writing an advetnure novel using his past travel journals. Maybe you can read about his crazy shenanigans someday soon!

Dagny Kream, Counselor, 17
Dagny Kream is a 17 year old unschooler from a small, beautiful farm town in MA. She enjoys photography, swimming, foraging, camping, sewing, hula hooping, eating, hiking, cooking, growing food and pretty flowers, being with creative and interesting people and too many other things to name!
She would love to talk to you about life, the universe and everything.

Trevor Shaw Allen, Night Counselor, 20

Bad at this kind of stuff, I much prefer face to face communication.
My name is Trevor Allen, I'm 20 and I have been told that I have many strange features which will be listed now:
I stare (no really, I stare into your soul (Also, I make faces))
I am very crass, unless I think you might be offended.
I am at times a little too sarcastic for my own good.
I like philosophical conversation.
I LOVE music.
I love to laugh!
My sleep schedule is completely random, some days I get to bed at 8AM and sleep for 6 hours, other days I'll be in bed by 5PM and get up at 1AM.
You have been warned.

Blake Jordan Boles, Medic, 27
Blake is a sun-loving traveler who is slowly (but surely) inching closer to his long-standing goals of (1) being fully self-employed and (2) working exclusively in camp or trip-leader roles. This past year he led two trips through his travel company, Unschool Adventures: a 4-week Novel-Writing Retreat and a 7-week Australian adventure.  He also ran a totally new 2-week leadership program for teen unschoolers (with the help of Cameron Lovejoy and Brenna McBroom, among others). Blake remains convinced that working with self-directed teens is as good as life gets.
Never having unschooled as a teen, Blake did the public school thing, went to college to study astrophysics, and had a change of heart half-way through thanks to a John Taylor Gatto book. He designed a new major and spent two years researching alternative education theory before graduating. Now he considers himself a bona fide unschooler--just with lots of years of school under his belt. Since college, Blake has worked as a snowboarding marketing researcher, high-volume chef, outdoor science teacher, medic, summer camp director, freelance web designer, and windsurfing and tree climbing instructor.
Blake wrote a book (College Without High School) that got published in 2009, and you can learn more about that on his website, www.blakeboles.com.  And if you’re interested in going on one of his international trips or leadership programs, please visit www.unschooladventures.com!
